We are Queen's Oxfam's newest campaign, and our goal is to bring attention to the need for access to public services in developing countries. Oxfam's For All campaign highlights the four most basic services: WATER, HEALTH CARE, EDUCATION, and SANITATION. In Canada, we usually take these four basics for granted, and forget that millions of people around the world lack access to one or more of these necessities.
Think Global
The goal of Oxfam's For All Campaign is to fight against the privatization of these four basic services, which marginalizes the most vulnerable groups on earth, particularly women. Our first priority is to inform the community about ways they can get involved in the fight for universal access to water, health care, education, and sanitation. For example, women in developing countries walk an average of 6km a day carrying 20L of water, and this challenge was one of the highlights of our Water Relay last year, which was a huge success and lots of fun. To get more involved in Oxfam's campaign, you can go to the website, Oxfam Canada's For All Campaign and sign the "Health, Education, and Safe Water Petition." It only takes 30 seconds!
Act Local
Our aim is to address both local and global issues. Our events this year will include: a fundraising campaign for a local women's shelter, movie nights, informal panel discussions hosted at local cafés, an informational campaign for International Women's Week 2010, and possibly the For All Olympics. Since Queen's For All is still relatively new, we need volunteers to help expand our campaign and brainstorm new ideas for events and fundraisers. We want the Queen's community to become advocates for a higher quality of living in the developing world and at home, and we are always welcoming new members.
